Mike Stroud and Evan Mast met while studying in the "Skidmore College," but did not work together to year 2001 when he recorded "cherry", a theme which later included in their self-titled debut album. This album was written and recorded in the apartment he owns in Brooklyn Mast, a laptop powerbook . This is a completely instrumental album, except the beginning and end of some songs.
The band started their career on the independent label Rex Recordings, with whom they released their first single "Seventeen Years" After they signed with XL Recordings , releasing their debut album and the single "Germany to Germany". Ratatat has also done versions of other groups, such as the critically acclaimed Ratatat Mixtape Vol 1 and more recently in Ratatat Mixtape Vol.2.
